Program Components
Fellows will participate in a program that includes:
- Skills Development. LXAI Fellows will complete a structured introduction to D-Lab workshops, including some custom workshops developed specifically for this cohort.
- Community Building. LXAI Fellows will be invited to join the D-Lab community and have the opportunity to attend research talks by D-Lab members, fostering intellectual exchange and interdisciplinary collaboration. LXAI Fellows will participate in community-building events both across D-Lab and within their cohort, developing meaningful connections across interdisciplinary fields.
- Mentorship. Fellows will receive one-on-one mentoring sessions from D-Lab Core Staff to support their professional development and career goals.
- Blog Posts. Fellows will produce a Blog Post on a data or AI-related topic that will be published in the D-Lab Blog, shared with our 10,000+ subscriber email list, and broadcast widely on social media.
- Stipend. LXAI will receive a $1000 stipend for successful completion of the Fellowship.
LXAI Fellows might write blog posts that:
- Highlight their existing projects, such as exploring bias in AI models, analyzing Latinx representation in data, or developing an approach to broadening AI participation.
- Reflect on ethical and social questions, for example, how AI can both challenge and reinforce inequality or how Latinx voices can shape emerging technologies.
- Share learning experiences, such as insights from D-Lab workshops, mentorship sessions, or the process of applying data science methods to their field.
- Feature cultural or creative perspectives, like experimenting with generative AI to express Latinx identity or storytelling.
- Offer practical guides, for instance, introducing accessible AI tools to a broader audience providing examples of their utility.
The program will take place in the Spring 2026 semester. Participants can expect to devote 3-4 hours a week, averaged across the semester (though note that the week-to-week commitment will be highly variable, so flexibility is desirable).
Applicants
Applications are open to Berkeley undergraduate and graduate students who will be students during the Spring 2026 semester. We are seeking applicants from all disciplines and at all learning levels, even if you have no experience with data science and AI.
Timeline
Applications are due Sunday, December 14 at 11:59 PM PST. Program activities will begin the week prior to the start of the Spring 2026 semester (January 13-16).
LLM Usage Policy
LLMs are powerful tools that can accelerate our work and knowledge-building. At the same time, LLMs can obscure our unique thoughts and opinions in our writing and research.
While Standard English is often privileged in academic settings, D-Lab values and affirms linguistic diversity. We encourage all participants to express yourself in your own voice and to use language that reflects your identity, culture, and lived experience. As a Latinx-centered community, we reject norms that silence our diverse ways of speaking and writing, and we invite you to be courageous in using your own words and modes of expression.
We encourage you to ensure your voice comes through in your application. When reviewing applications, we will prioritize those in which your unique voice and experience is evident in your writing.
