Joyce Chen

Data Science & AI Fellow 2025-2026
College of Engineering

Joyce is a PhD candidate in Transportation Engineering. Her research focuses on assessing safety and network impacts of autonomous vehicles. She has teaching experiences in statistics and programming. Prior to Berkeley, Joyce obtained her Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from the University of Michigan, and had worked as a software engineer at various companies.

Carly Karrick

Data Science & AI Fellow 2025-2026
Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management

Carly is a Ph.D. candidate in the Environmental Science, Policy, and Management Department. As an environmental microbiologist, Carly is excited by questions about how microorganisms influence host health. Specifically, Carly studies how microalgae, bacteria, and viruses influence coral disease in the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico, and how these microorganisms are distributed on Pacific coral reefs. Her research utilizes a range of data science and bioinformatic tools to integrate DNA- and RNA-based signatures of microbial activity with microscopy image analysis. Carly received...

Abby O'Neill

Data Science & AI Fellow 2025-2026
Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences (EECS)

I'm a PhD student in Berkeley AI Research (BAIR). My research interests include interpretability, robotics, computer vision, AI for the environment, and education, though the list keeps growing and probably needs some pruning. I'm a little nervous, but mostly hopeful about the future we're building and about the role data plays in shaping it.

Paige Park

Data Science & AI Fellow 2025-2026
Demography

Paige Park is a Doctoral candidate in Demography. Her dissertation investigates applications of AI to demography, including deep learning based demographic forecasting. She is interested in using emerging tools to better model and contextually understand mortality, fertility, and migration patterns, particularly in the US context. She received an MA in Statistics from UC Berkeley in 2023.

Sam Temlock

Data Science Fellow 2021-2022
School of Information

Sam (he/him) is a Master of Information and Data Science graduate student at the School of Information, with experience in Cybersecurity and Network Programming. He holds a BS in Computer Systems Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and has previous experience in consulting at Deloitte. He has experience with Python, R, SQL, machine learning, data analytics, statistical analysis, and research design.

Monica Donegan

Data Science Fellow 2022-2023
Environmental Science, Policy, and Management

Monica is a third-year Ph.D. candidate in the Environmental Science, Policy, and Management program. She uses computational tools to study the evolution and ecology of agricultural plant pathogens. Previously, she worked on a data science team at a biotech company in Boston.

Jaewon Saw

Data Science Fellow 2024-2025
Civil and Enviromental Engineering

I am a PhD candidate in Systems Engineering. My current research focuses on distributed acoustic sensing (DAS), a cutting-edge technology with diverse applications. I have used DAS to detect whale vocalizations in Monterey Bay, California, and to monitor roadways, water pipelines, and energy infrastructure.

I enjoy identifying and mitigating challenges that arise when applying new technologies by developing data tools, pipelines, and frameworks for real-world deployments. My work is driven by a keen interest in exploring and refining innovative...

Suraj Nair

Data Science Fellow 2023-2024
School of Information

I am a PhD Student at the School of Information. My research interests lie at the intersection of development economics and machine learning, with a focus on the use of large scale digital data and new computational tools to study pressing issues in global development.

Emma Turtelboom

Data Science Fellow 2023-2024
Astronomy

I am a PhD student in the Astronomy department, and I study planets outside our own solar system. I'm interested in learning how the properties of host stars affect planetary systems. In my free time, I love swimming, hiking, reading, and baking.
