Hellina Hailu Nigatu

Data Science for Social Justice Senior Fellow 2024
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS)

I am a PhD student at UC Berkeley in the EECS department co-advised by Prof. Sarah Chasins and Prof. John Canny. My research interest broadly lies in the intersection of AI and HCI, with a focus on making usable AI tools accessible to end users.

I am currently looking into making NLP tools usable and accessible for low-resourced languages. I am also interested in the impact of AI on society, specifically in how it affects Global Majority countries and communities. Outside of research, I like to read books, make and drink traditional Ethiopian coffee, knit,...

Searching for Other Solar Systems

November 21, 2023
by Emma Turtelboom. Over the last three decades, we have discovered over 5000 exoplanets, which are planets outside of our Solar System. With these observations, we can try to answer many questions we have about the universe. For example, how unique is the Solar System? How do planets form? Is there life elsewhere in the Milky Way? We can query the NASA Exoplanet Archive to compare multi-planet systems to the Solar System. Through this, we can compare how similar (or dissimilar!) the systems are.

The Rise of Climbing

As an avid rock climber, I’ve been curious about how climbing became so popular in such a brief time, and what these climbers look like. Unlike other well established sports such as tennis, football, or basketball, climbing has only recently gained attention on the public stage, and little data is available about this burgeoning sport. For context, back in the day, climbing was a serious commitment! You had to find a buddy to learn how to use climbing equipment...
