Calling All Graduate Students: Join the D-Lab Consulting Fellows Team!
Are you a graduate student with strong research skills and a passion for helping others? D-Lab is recruiting Consulting Fellows and Statistical Consulting Fellows to support students, faculty, and staff with their data-intensive projects.
What you’ll do: As a D-Lab Consulting Fellow, you will provide research consultation support to Berkeley community members, offering your expertise to help your colleagues solve cutting-edge research questions. D-Lab Consulting Fellowships offer flexible scheduling around your academic commitments.
What you’ll get: You will gain valuable interdisciplinary experience applying your expertise to real-world research questions, develop your consulting and communication skills, and join a supportive community of peers and mentors. D-Lab Consulting Fellows receive mentorship from the entire D-Lab community, including other Consulting Fellows, D-Lab Senior Data Scientists and D-Lab Core Staff. Finally, all D-Lab Consulting Fellows receive a stipend.
Who we’re looking for: We’re particularly seeking individuals with strengths in data analysis, programming, or statistical methods. However, students from all research backgrounds are welcome to apply. Successful D-Lab Consulting Fellows are reliable communicators, thoughtful in how they approach research problems, and have intellectual curiosity to approach new fields and problems.

Fellowship Commitment
The D-Lab Consulting Fellowship is a two-semester commitment, with fellows expected to participate in both semesters consecutively.
The time commitment is approximately 3–4 hours per week over 13 weeks per semester, totaling about 40 hours per semester All Consulting Fellows are required to attend weekly team meetings as part of their responsibilities and professional development.

Specialized Area of Interest
For the Fall semester we are looking to onboard D-Lab Consulting Fellows with expertise in following areas:

Statistical Methods Specialist (focus: regression, causal inference, hierarchical models, survey sampling)

Qualitative Research & Tools (focus: MaxQDA, NVivo, Dedoose, interview analysis, thematic coding)
-
Programming for Research (focus: Python and/or R for data analysis, reproducibility, scripting)
-
Geospatial Analysis (focus: GIS tools, spatial statistics, mapping)
-
Machine Learning / High-Dimensional Data (focus: model tuning, regularization, predictive analytics)
-
Data Visualization & Communication (focus: ggplot2, seaborn, Tableau, storytelling with data)

Roles and Responsibilities
As a D-Lab Consulting Fellow, you will be expected to:

Respond to and support at least two consulting tickets per week.

Attend a 45-minute weekly team meeting and actively contribute to peer learning and knowledge sharing.

Communicate promptly and professionally with D-Lab core staff via email and Slack.

Maintain consistent communication with consultees after claiming a ticket, ensuring timely updates and follow-up.

Use Slack and bCal (Google Calendar) effectively for coordination and communication.
Stipend, Advancement & Application Review
Consulting Fellows will receive a stipend of $1,100, contingent upon the satisfactory completion of the responsibilities outlined above and active participation in D-Lab activities. A mid-semester evaluation will be conducted to assess progress and ensure expectations are being met.
Upon successful completion of a full academic year, Consulting Fellows may be invited to continue their work as Senior Consulting Fellows. Fellows are also encouraged to consider applying for the Data Science Fellows program to further expand their involvement.
