Human Rights Coverage Over Time: A Tutorial in Automated Text Analysis

I’ve learned a lot through the D-Lab, from Python and basic coding to automated text analysis and web scraping. In the spirit of paying it forward, this blog post provides a tutorial on one specific project that I was able to perform using the skills I gained at the D-Lab: analyzing human rights media coverage. What determines American media coverage on human rights? How does it vary over time and space? What characterizes it substantively?

Work for us this Fall?

 We're looking for grad students to join us in the D-Lab this Fall.

If you feel inspired to help fellow researchers and students, we're starting to collect information about possible contributors to add to our staff for the Fall. We have an open, inclusive culture that values diversity and open exchange. We'll let you develop leadership in a particular area while working collaboratively with other students and staff.

Our needs tend to fall into five categories, The first three are usually filled with a 25% to 50% appoinment.

Summer Undergraduate Intern 2014

The Social Sciences Data Laboratory (D-Lab) is seeking an undergraduate intern for 8-10 weeks during the summer of 2014. The internship is targeted toward groups traditionally underrepresented in data-intensive research. This paid summer internship will provide an undergraduate with the opportunity to learn and apply data-intensive social science skills with broad applicability in research and analysis.  We are seeking applicants with strong interests and potential to develop skills in this area, who have completed at least two years of study or the equivalent.

After an intensive search, we are delighted to announce the appointment of Professor Justin McCrary as the founding Director of D-Lab, the Social Sciences Data Laboratory. Professor McCrary is Professor of Law and Co-Director of the Law and Economics Program. He brings to the position of founding D-Lab Director an unmatched combination of start-up energy, technical skills, and broad vision.
